Joel Headshot Full

Joel graduated from Clemson University in 1991 with a bachelor’s degree in architectural design. Early in his career, he focused on the design of welcoming, well-planned spaces for people engaged in eating out, shopping, learning and attending services on behalf of clients in the restaurant, retail, education and religious fields.

Translating his talents and experience to the residential marketplace, Joel began creating useful, personal spaces and welcoming atmospheres in his clients’ homes. He founded Studio 291 in 2002 and, in addition to his work on behalf of firm clients, went on to develop the architectural guidelines of the Water’s Edge community as its architectural review administrator, serve on the City of Charleston Board of Zoning Appeals, founded Island Family Builders, and served as chairman for the Wild Dunes Property Owner’s Association Architectural Review Board these experiences that enhanced his ability to move projects through the design process while working with various community architectural review boards.

Joel also holds a South Carolina Residential Builder’s License. While he no longer builds homes, choosing instead to concentrate on home design, he works closely with some of the best custom home builders in the Lowcountry.
